November 9, 1918 ~ October 24, 2013 (age 94)
In 1941, Gordon entered the 7th Reserve Officers Class, USMC, at Quantico, Virginia, and served over 30 months in Guadalcanal during WWII. He was discharged under the appointed rank of major. Prior to deployment, on April 25, 1942, he married Marion Liken in Washington, D.C., this year celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary.
In 1947, Gordon began his career in the lumber industry, joining A.C. Dutton Lumber of Poughkeepsie, New York, and moved his family to Portland in 1957 to open a West Coast office for the company. He retired from Dutton in 1980, and formed Scott Lumber Company a year later. He was widely known and respected by the building industry in Hawaii, having been one of the first commodity wood products suppliers to that market beginning in 1958.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed all sports, especially golf and fly-fishing trips he took twice a year on the McKenzie with long time friends. In 1981, he and Marion began attending the 7th ROC Class annual reunions in cities around the country, enjoying, for 22 consecutive years, the camaraderie and lifelong bond with his fellow Marines and their spouses. At age 85, he returned to County Mayo, Ireland to meet his first cousins and see again his mother’s home where he was photographed 83 years prior at age two.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Magnus; daughter, Honora Scott; and great-granddaughter, Kailee Gillespie.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; sons, Gordon (Paula), Michael and John (Colleen); daughter, Marianne Gillespie (Kerry); nieces, Mary Jane Sardone (Frank) and Barbara Delaney (Jim); eight grandchildren; and fifteen great- grandchildren.
Gordon loved his wife, children, grand and great-grandchildren and of course, his beloved dogs. He was a wonderful man and will remain forever in our hearts.
As a founding member of St. John Fisher Parish, remembrances may be made to the church at 7007 SW 46th Avenue, Portland, OR 97219.
A private family mass has been held.
