Born in Pawnee County, Nebraska, she graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1936 with degrees in economics and business administration. She retired from the Social Security Administration after 34 years of service. She was a charitable person with her money and her time, receiving the Jefferson Award in 1982 for her volunteer work. Evelyn married Roy Hedlund in 1952.

Evelyn is survived by her nieces and nephews.

A woman of faith always, she was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Laurelhurst, 935 N.E. 33 Avenue, Portland, OR 97232.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, at the church.

To the Hedlund family,
I was deeply saddened to read of the death of Evelyn. You don’t always have to know a family to have empathy for them when they lose a loved one in death. I wish to express my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences as you endure this great loss. Our loving Heavenly Father also feels deep empathy and there for assures us that when Revelation 21:4 is fulfilled, death, pain and mourning will be eliminated. And because our savior Jesus Christ gave his life for us, he said “all those in the memorial tombs..will come out.” John 5:28, 29. I pray that these scriptures will comfort you also, as you await the time when you and Evelyn are reunited in the resurrection and when death, pain, and mourning will be a thing of the past.
With deep sympathy, Joel
