March 1, 1932 ~ December 29, 2012 (age 80)
Dr. Robert Edward “Bob” Craven, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his Lake Oswego home on December 29, 2012. Dr. Bob Craven was an exceptional Radiologist who practiced in Portland for 40 years.
Born on March 1, 1932 in Williston, N.D., Bob Craven was the son of Dr. John Patrick “Jack” Craven and Alice B. Craven. He grew up with his older brother, Patrick and sister, Jan amongst a large contingent of Craven aunts, uncles, and cousins that permeated the Williston community. The Craven family name was respected throughout the area for excellent medical care, and to this day, The Craven-Hagen Clinic bears their name.
Young Bob grew up as a good student who loved music, sports and was a left-handed pitcher on the Williston High School baseball team. After years of observing his uncle, “Dr. Joe”, and his father, “Dr. Jack”, care for patients in the Eastern MT/Western ND region, Bob pursued a pre-medicine curriculum at St. Thomas College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He dated Sarah Ann “Sally” Byrne from Brockton, Montana, who attended St. Catherine’s College also in Minnesota. After three years at St. Thomas, Bob entered Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bob and Sally’s growing love for each other culminated when they married after his junior year of medical school on June 16, 1956. Their first child, Michael Francis, was born in Omaha. After graduation from medical school in 1957, the family moved first to Saint Paul, Minnesota for Bob’s one year internship at Ramsey Hospital, then to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Bob’s residency years in Radiology. Their two daughters, Kathleen Marie and Theresa Marie, were born in Milwaukee. A one year fellowship of specialized study at Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo, New York followed, after which Bob and Sally decided to stake their home in Portland, where they had three more sons, James Patrick, Daniel Byrne and Robert Edward.
Bob practiced as a radiologist for 28 years at Holiday Park Hospital prior to its closure. He and longtime friend and partner, Dr. David Wright (also originally from Williston, N.D.) then practiced at the Broadway Clinic, The Breast Clinic and Santiam Hospital in Stayton. Always out the door at 7 a.m., Bob pursued life with dedication and commitment. Away from work, he filled his time with his wife, Sally, his family and friends. Bob loved golf, gardening, bowling, sports, photography and playing cards with friends at Oswego Lake Country Club. He was an avid book reader and sang Baritone in the Our Lady of the Lake Church and in Portland Symphony Choir for many years. Together, he and Sally exemplified their love of family with memorable gatherings on Holidays, Birthdays and Family Celebrations. Bob and Sally were married for 51 years.
Sally preceded Bob in death five years ago.
Bob is survived by his children, Michael, Kathleen and husband, Rod; Theresa and husband, David, Jim and wife, Jill, Daniel and fiancee, Mary and Robert and wife, Malia. Bob is survived by 11 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Oswego, 650 SW A Avenue, Lake Oswego, OR 97034.
