Walter Walling Obituary

Walter Charles Walling (92), the eldest son of Walter Clair and Ethel Belle (Carlson) Walling, passed away on Nov. 17, 2012 at the Mary’s Woods Retirement Facility in Lake Oswego. Mr. Walling was a longtime resident of Lake Oswego, having moved there with his family in 1959. He was born in Chicago on March 1, 1920.

As a young person, he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and Minneapolis. In 1935, his family moved to Eugene, where he later graduated from Eugene High School. There, he met Dolores Lorraine Tobler, whom he married in 1941. They were married for 62 years until Dolores’ death in 2003.

Mr. Walling received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University in 1941 and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from New York University in 1943. Following graduation, he worked for Lockheed in Burbank, Calif. Later, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Lexington in the South Pacific. He spent most of his professional life in forest product sales working for Masonite Corp, Dant & Russell, Georgia-Pacific and Mortenson Steam Systems. He concluded his career working in business mergers for Crader & Associates in Lake Oswego.

Mr. Walling was a member of the Al Kader Shrine Temple in Portland, the Rotary Club of Southwest Portland, the Elks Club and the Oswego Lake Country Club. He and Dolores were benefactors for Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, Lewis & Clark College, Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation, Providence Child Care Foundation, The Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, The Rotary Foundation and Christ Episcopal Church and the Oswego Heritage Council in Lake Oswego.

Mr. Walling is survived by his wife, Patricia (Cushing) Walling, whom he married in 2006. He is also survived by his three children, son, Dennis (Carol) of Clemson, S.C.; and granddaughters, Sara Elizabeth and Joanna; daughter, Virginia Hall (Michael) of Bellevue, Wash.; and grandsons, Jeremy, Andrew and Kevin; and son, Richard (Christine) of Richland, Wash.; and granddaughter, Amy; and grandson, Christopher. Further, he has four great-grandchildren, David and Kaleigh Hall, Chloe Kesseler and Tyler Hall.

Donations in memory of Walter Charles Walling may be made to any of the benefited organizations above. Mr. Walling’s interment ceremony will be private.
