Richard Mathews Obituary

Richard “Dick” H. Mathews made everyone smile that he met. Always full of life, he enjoyed it until the end.

Dick was born on June 6th, 1924 in Portland, Oregon to his parents, Clifford and Adele Mathews. He died August 16, 2011 at St. Vincent’s Hospital due to complications from a recent major stroke.

Dick graduated from Holy Redeemer grade school, Jefferson High School and attended Oregon State University. During World War II, Dick served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the 104th Infantry (aka “The Timberwolves”). His “pick-em up and patch-em up” positive attitude endeared him to many, including several generals. He spent the latter portion of his career as an accountant for Tri-Met. After Dick’s retirement, he served for several years as a Board member of the West Slope water district. His slogan was “I’m not just another drip in the bucket”.

A day pursuing Dick’s passion of snow skiing at Timberline Lodge led to finding his true love, Virginia. You always knew where he was on the slopes with his “too-de-loo” yodel. Dick also liked being on the water, whether crabbing in Nehalem Bay or water skiing on Lake Oswego. He loved to go, go, go. His adventures took him to Mexico, China, Ireland and more with family and friends. Dick and Virginia loved the many cruises taken with the family because of the special times spent together.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia; daughters, Debbie (Jay), Mary (Mark), Molly (Roger); and son, David (Lynn). Dick enjoyed his seven grandchildren (David, Michael, Scott, Sean, Samantha, Erin and Kelsey) and two great-grandchildren (Luke and Mikey).
