February 1, 1920 ~ June 21, 2017 (age 97)
Nil Loeung was born on February 1, 1920 in Taloas Moung Russey Battambang, Cambodia. She was born into the family of Mouy Sey Loeung and Houy Too. She was the second oldest sibling of 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Nil Loeung was married twice and has four children. Her children are: Ngorng Mok, Cheng Mok, Rong Tan, and Tara Kang. Among her four children, Nil has a total of 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
In Cambodia, Nil Loeung was a girl scout, midwife, and homemaker. She delivered several of her grandchildren and many other children within her community. Nil and her two children: Cheng Mok and Rong Tan gathered their families and fled Cambodia to begin a new life in the United States. In 1980, she and her two children were reunited with her youngest son Tara Kang and his family in Oregon.
While living in Oregon, Nil lived a very simplistic and independent lifestyle. She enjoyed sewing and harvesting her own crops to share with family and friends. She was adored and loved by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She dedicated her time to helping her family and devoted the remaining of her life to help her community in Cambodia by rebuilding a special bridge that was significant to her and her family.
