Galen Ohmart Obituary

Galen B. Ohmart passed away unexpectedly June 11, 2017 in Portland, due to post-surgery complications. He was born March 2, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan, to Dr. Galen Donald and Dorothy (Guzak) Ohmart. He spent his early years in Colorado, where he met his high school sweetheart, Kimberlysue. Galen and Kimberlysue Morton later married July 12, 1980 in Evergreen, Colorado. They moved to Eugene, where they raised their three children, Benjamin, Meghan, and Nolan. Galen then was remarried to Teresa Loe, April 2, 2010. Recently, he lived with his loving companion, Bettina Jensen.

Galen graduated from the University of Oregon with a Masters in Architecture. Shortly thereafter he started his own firm, eventually forming SOLARC with two other business partners. Throughout his career, Galen sought to build a stronger community through sustainable architecture. His notable projects include the Food For Lane County building, which won a national AIA award for sustainable design, his work on the Willamalane Sports Center, Oregon Ki Society, and Co-Motion Cycles. He was continuously engaged with the local community, volunteering as a Scout Master and sitting on the board at Food for Lane County. Galen was a mentor to many, often sharing his personal and professional knowledge and skills with an indescribable intensity.

He worked hard and lived life with an energy that impacted anyone he met. He actively pursued many passions including fly fishing, ice hockey, mountaineering, skiing, and cycling. He enjoyed gathering in celebration. When he wasn’t on a mission logging vert, he could be found sitting around the table laughing with close friends and family over food, a whiskey, or beer.

Galen is survived by his children, Benjamin (Michelle), Meghan and Nolan; his grandson, Warren; his parents, Don and Dorothy; and his siblings, Michael (Karen Juhre), Sarah (Robert) New and Andrew (Tessa). Galen’s three children were the highlight of his life and together they enjoyed many wonderful adventures in the outdoors. Galen’s many stories told on the hiking trail inspired Ben to start rock climbing. Meghan has fond memories of running together and travelling to Jordan. Nolan shared Galen’s passion for ice hockey.

One reply on “Galen Ohmart”

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Bettina and the Ohmart family and friends of Galen. When death robs us of someone we love very much, it causes much sadness and grief. Our loving heavenly Father, Jehovah (Psalm 83:18) gives us hope at Revelations 21: 4 says: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.” Isaiah 33:24 guarantees us: “And no resident will say “I am sick,” ever again. May these promises from Jehovah God bring you comfort. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, but we are all guaranteed a resurrection. (John 5:28, John 11:23-25) Again, the family is in my prayers and I offer my heartfelt condolences.
