October 22, 1926 ~ March 16, 2017 (age 90)
Frederick was born on October 22, 1926 in New Braunfels, Texas to John Marshall and Viola (Klingemann) Beaty. He grew up in New Braunfels and after high school attended the University of Texas where he received a BA degree. He went on to receive a Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford University in England, and received his MA and PhD in English Literature at Harvard University. After finishing college he served a stint in the US Army stationed in Maryland working in counterintelligence. He began his teaching career in 1953 at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
In 1955 he married his wife of 61 years Martha Jean Ross, whom he had met while attending the University of Texas. He was a professor of English at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana from 1955 until his retirement in 1991. He specialized in 19th century British romantic literature and authored several books on the subject including the literature of Lord Byron and Evelyn Waugh.
In 2010 he and Martha moved to Mary’s Woods, a retirement community in Lake Oswego to be closer to their family. He made many good friends during his lifetime including his years at Mary’s Woods where he was active in the movie committee and the German club, while also volunteering to give talks on various topics from Shakespeare to European travel. He enjoyed doing readings at the Sunday church services and was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Prior to and after retirement he especially enjoyed travelling to Europe with Martha and his daughters and spent many vacations there. Frederick was a loving husband, father, friend and scholar who touched the lives of many people. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife Martha, daughters Margaret (William) Keenan and Emily Beaty (Tom Guyette), and grandchildren Andrea, Sarah, Zachary, Daniel and James.
A service was held at Mary’s Woods Chapel in Lake Oswego on March 22, 2017.
