November 11, 1935 ~ March 23, 2016 (age 80)
Alice Jane Streitwieser Morgan, wife of the late David Stevenson Morgan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016. Alice fought a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, following her husband’s own battle with the same cancer 12 years prior.
Alice was born in 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska to Hans and Berdie Streitwieser. The family migrated to Oregon during the dust bowl in the late 1930’s. Growing up as a child during WW2, Alice worked hard to help her family grow much of their own food and raise chickens and rabbits. She did manage to find time to enjoy her freedom to explore the many forests and wetlands of her West Slope neighborhood.
When her mother passed away at an early age, she and her father moved to Hillsboro, Oregon where he married Ruth Ulin Streitwieser. The two were longtime business owners of Streitwieser Buick. Alice attended B W Barnes Middle School and Hillsboro High School. She graduated from Pacific University with a degree in Education where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Gamma.
Alice taught for 34 years in the Portland Public Schools, including Marysville, Atkinson, Multnomah and Arleta. She took a special interest in every student, including the most difficult ones — advising parents on proper diet, sleep, and care. She purchased books, toothbrushes and combs out of her own pocket not infrequently. She was ever vocal of the critical role that educators have in the shaping of future citizens and leaders. She loved kids and they loved her.
In 1971, Alice married David S. Morgan and became mother to Philip and Emily. They enjoyed much of their time together traveling, cooking and gardening, as well as establishing many traditions with extended family. She was also a member of the Oregon Historical Society, The Portland Art Museum and the Multnomah Athletic Club.
Alice is survived by her son, Philip Morgan, grandsons Taylor and Cody Morgan; daughter Emily Uhl, (Paul), grandsons Simon and Matteo Uhl; sister Linda Stine; nephew Erik Stine; niece Dagny Abel, (Neil), grandnephews McLean and Theron Abel.
