Emmiliese Clemm Obituary

In keeping with the way she lived her life, Emmiliese von Clemm (nee Asamer) died peacefully and on her own terms in her Portland home on November 29, 2015. She left this world with much gratitude for the love and care provided by family and friends during her final illness, a small measure of what she offered the world during her life.

Emmiliese was born September 5, 1935 in Salzburg, Austria, the only daughter in a family of four children. Following studies in England, Italy and Switzerland, she married Eberhard von Clemm in 1957, immediately joining him in a bold move to the United States, proudly becoming a naturalized citizen in 1963. She has called Portland home from 1957-1959, and then again since 1972.

Emmiliese was proudest of her civic activities which she always felt needed to begin at the roots. She started a neighborhood list so that neighbors could stay connected and could as a group champion environmentally and culturally sound local development, thereby preserving pedestrian/biker access, watersheds, historic sites and tranquility. Emmiliese was a zealous advocate for families and children in need, working with the Junior League in Montreal, Canada on low-cost childcare for immigrant families, and with Waverly Children’s Home in Portland, Oregon where she volunteered for 20 years and served as Board Chairman for 2 years. Finally, Emmiliese was a strong supporter of human rights and equality.

She was an avid gardener, a lover of the Oregon Symphony, a sharp dresser, and a curious explorer of diverse peoples, places and cultures. She spoke four languages and her travels took her around the world.

Emmiliese is survived by her three children and their spouses, Christine and Robert “Dusty” Staub of Greensboro, NC; Peter and Jennifer (Jones) von Clemm of Palo Alto, CA; and Elisabeth von Clemm and Bruce Connors of Greensboro, NC and Portland, OR; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one great grandson. She will also be missed by her brother Hans Asamer of Salzburg, Austria and her dear family friend, Richard Herdman of Santa Fe, NM.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow in the Parish Hall. (Emmiliese encourages attendees to wear something colorful rather than black!) A Rosary will be held at the Church at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Oregon, the Oregon Food Bank, or All Classical Radio.

I would like to extend my sympathy to the family. Losing a loved in death is not easy, but God gives us support to endure. “Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit. And He will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Psalms 34:18; Isaiah 25:8 NWT Bible. Peace be with you all.

Emmeliese will always have a very special place in our hearts. I always loved to hear my Mom, Sharyn Flanigan share her stories of Emmeliese. And of course every time I got to see Emmeliese it was always wonderful! She was one of a kind…so incredibly gracious…she was not just one in a million she was one in a billion! We were truly blessed to have been a part of her life.
