John Pyle Obituary

Jack passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 84. He was born in Peoria, Ill., and was first of two boys to John T. and Ruth M. Pyle. He was raised in Peoria before the family moved to Olympia, where he completed high school. He was recruited by the University of Oregon to play baseball, where he lettered and earned a coveted place in the Order of the O. He graduated from Oregon in 1953 with a degree in economics. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

He met his wife, Diane Goddard Pyle, while attending Oregon. He entered the U.S. Air Force upon graduation and married Diane the following year. They were married 60 ½ years. After being discharged from the service, they made their first home in La Grande, where he became involved with a fledgling industry called cable television. His first son, John, was born in La Grande. He moved his family to Eugene in 1958, where he began a new career selling insurance. His second son, Robert, and daughter, Sally, were born in Eugene. He was a member of the Eugene Country Club for 49 years, built a home on the famed “6th hole” and served as president of the club in 1988.

He coached all three children in athletics, a total of 40 plus individual seasons, including baseball, softball, basketball and football. His teams won several city (Eugene) championships as well as two state championships in high school softball, finishing his final season of coaching with a record of 30-0. He had a love for anything athletic, especially when it had to do with his beloved Oregon Ducks where he was a season ticket holder for Oregon football and Oregon basketball for over 40 years. He served on the Foundation Board at PeaceHealth Hospital.

He and Diane traveled throughout the world including memorable trips to Europe, China, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska and California. He was an exceptional father and wonderful inspiration to those he encountered throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, John (Suzanne), Robert (Barry) and Sally (John C. Kootnekoff); grandchildren, David, Molly, Hannah, Jackson, Emily and Benjamin; and brother, Jan of Pullman, Wash.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst, Lake Oswego. Remembrances may be made to PeaceHealth Hospital.
