Albert Corrado Obituary

Albert Dominic Corrado, 90, born November 3, 1933, died on October 8, 2024, at home, in Portland, OR, surrounded by his wife and family.

Al grew up in an ethnically diverse blue collar neighborhood in downtown Portland. His northern Italian immigrant parents ran a grocery store and a tavern. He and Susanne Mayer married in 1953, and ROTC made it possible to graduate from University of Portland in 1955. The United States Air Force sent Lieutenant Corrado and his newlywed to bases in Texas, Georgia and Oklahoma before returning to Portland. Al then helped launch a brokerage firm, which eventually merged with another to become Columbia Management Company, where he served as a partner for more than 40 years.

Catholic school education was deeply important to both Al and Sue. As past chairman and a life member of University of Portland’s Board of Regents, he donated generously to his alma mater. In 2001, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service. Their gifts helped build Corrado Hall, a student residence on campus, and provide for student scholarships. The Corrados were one of the founding families of St. John Fisher Parish and School in 1957, from which all of their children and numerous grandchildren graduated. They gave generously to Central Catholic High School, from which Al graduated in 1951, and from which all six of his sons and numerous grandchildren and a great-grandson also graduated. Their gifts aided St. Mary’s Academy, alma mater of their daughter. Institutions throughout the northwest, including Catholic Charities, and the Serra Club, benefitted from their generosity.

Work aside, Al could be found fly fishing in any convenient stream or hunting for chanterelles around Mt. Hood. He relished long games of dominoes, cribbage and pitch, or golfing at the coast or mountains. But dearest to Al were friends, faith and family. A toast to “la familia” would bring him to an emotional full stop. Rooms buzzed when he entered, and a dance floor rarely got a rest. His grin set his impossibly blue eyes alight as they plumbed your very essence, and you became the most important thing in his world at that moment.

Al is survived by Sue, his beloved wife of 71 years, and their sons, Nick (Conchi), Greg (Mary Jo), Chris (Kimra), Matt (Antoinette), Peter (Mary), Andrew (Kelly), and daughter Melissa Lowes (Grant) and, at last count, 19 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Domenico (Dan), mother Alice, sisters Petronilla (Pat) Hungerford and Elisa Boller, brother Joseph, and infant granddaughter, Kirsi.

Services will be held November 7, 2024, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 4567 SW Nevada St, Portland, OR 97219. A Rosary will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by Mass at 11:00 AM.
