Alice Bish Obituary

Alice Ann Bish was born in Portland in 1932. She was the middle sister to Ruth Marie and Irene Mae. She graduated from Roosevelt High School, studied piano, and played for a local radio show, and ballet school.

At 17 years of age she lost her mother, Lucy Lee Bish.

Alice Majored in Music at Portland University, where she met her future husband Raymond Magone of St. Helen’s Oregon. Ray and Alice settled in St. Helen’s and had four children Daniel, David, Shelley, and Craig.

In 1964, the family moved to San Francisco where Alice became a single parent. Choosing to raise the children in a more rural setting, she moved the family to Sonoma County in Northern California.

Alice was a diligent and hard working single parent. She sold furniture for Emporium Capwells, and paint and wall coverings for Malvino’s. She studied Interior Design at home, and eventually taught Interior Design classes at Santa Rosa Junior College.

When Alice set out to renovate a Victorian house in Healdsburg California, the project quickly became a family affair and home to her own business, Interiors of Healdsburg. Alice was a member of Soroptimist International. She was active in the local community, and Interiors of Healdsburg was featured several times in the local newspaper.

In later years, Alice was a foster parent to a number of deserving children from Lake County, California. She was a lifelong child advocate with a strong determination to make a difference in the lives of her young charges.

Alice loved animals, and always had at least one dog. She raised birds— hatched from eggs in a home incubator, and maintained a menagerie of exotic pets including llamas, emus, and white peacocks. She loved entertaining family and friends, and was devoted to her cactus garden and self-designed outdoor kitchen.

In 2001, after her youngest son, Craig Alan Magone, unexpectedly passed away in Dutch Harbor Alaska, Alice moved to Alaska to be closer to her family there. She and son, David Magone, co-owned Talkeetna Bed and Breakfast Inn where Alice, as an all-around great cook and gracious hostess, welcomed guests from around the world. She wrote a cookbook, Treasured Recipes, which features local ingredients used in home-made meals at the Inn, and for family gatherings. Alice always had an extra place at the table, and in her heart, for drop-in guests or neighbors.

On December 10, 2021, Alice passed at 89 years of age with her sense of humor, much grace, and tremendous gratitude for her family as well as for her caregivers in Castro Valley, California. She looked forward to reuniting with her mom and her son, Craig.

She leaves behind children and foster children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren; and so many loved ones; Daniel and Sue Magone of Wasilla Alaska, David Magone of Long Beach Washington, Debra Brown of Longview Washington, Shelley and Robert Wagner of El Dorado Hills California,  Samantha Faulkner of Richlands North Carolina, and Theresa Magone of Eagle Point, Oregon.

In her final days, Alice spoke lovingly of her grandchildren and great grandchildren; Nat and Kellie Magone of Seattle Washington, Meghan Jameson and Craig Alan Magone II, Ayden Marie and Kain Alan Magone of Seattle Washington, Taylor Magone of Eagle Point Oregon, Luke and Amy Magone and Adalyn Taylor and Alena Kathy Mae Magone of Cape Coral Florida; Andrea Magone, Cecil Magone and Carter Ace and Sophia Lux Magone of Wasilla Alaska; Kathryn and Jose Rios and Santiago and Daniel Rios of Folsom California, and David Wagner of El Dorado Hills California.

Alice never forgot her loved ones and always held them in high esteem. She enjoyed happy memories with cousins Larry and Dianne Bitte of Carlotta California, Garry and Karen Wilson of Issaquah Washington, Jim Johnson and Jeanette Johnson of Salem Oregon, Cheryl and Howard Harawitz of Alameda California, Monica Deluca of West Linn, Oregon; and Debbie and Peter Beaney of Southwater West Sussex UK.  She greatly admired her nieces and nephews; Billy Dietzel of Everett, Pennsylvania, Sandra Dietzel of Baltimore Maryland, Ginny and John Fan of Lakewood Ranch Florida; Christina Castro of Nottingham Maryland, David Castro of Baltimore, and Michael and Sophie Castro of Los Angeles, California.
