Alice Bartelt Obituary

Alice Marie Bartelt

August 27, 1947 – August 29, 2023

A celebration of life will be held October 13, 2023, for Alice Marie Bartelt, who passed away at Providence St. Vincent Hospital unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at the age of 76 on August 29, 2023.

Alice was born on August 27, 1947, in Norfolk, VA to the late Ruth and Gene Parkhurst. Gene was active in the Navy at the time, a career which took the family to Cuba for a few years before settling down in San Diego. Alice attended elementary and high school growing up in San Diego, where she met her future husband, Richard Alan Bartelt (Dick). Alice and Dick eloped and were married in 1966 in San Francisco, where Alice earned an undergraduate degree from San Francisco State University.

Alice and Dick moved to Portland in 1970, where they raised their family, and where Alice put into earnest action her passion for supporting organizations dedicated to women’s rights. She earned a law degree from Lewis & Clark College in 1981 and went to work for the State Accident Insurance Fund (SAIF Corporation) for 25 years. She lost her husband to cancer in 2006. A few years later, she met her new steadfast conference companion, Paul Moore.

She happily served AAUW at the local and national levels since 1970 and has also been actively involved with the League of Women Voters, Zonta International, Naral Pro-Choice Oregon, Oregon Women Lawyers, Washington County Democrats, the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, and the National/Oregon Association of Parliamentarians, among many others. Additional interests and pursuits included reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, Jeopardy!, and antiquing as well as attending/supporting local symphony and theater productions, including Broadway Rose and Bag&Baggage.

To the countless colleagues, associates, and friends she met through her volunteer activities, her passing leaves an enormous hole, the size of which far belies that which Alice’s physical stature occupied. She was always willing to step in to fill a need, to serve as a mentor to many, and to share her limitless knowledge of Robert’s Rules of Order and parliamentary procedures. Those who will miss her most have exalted her as kind, considerate, helpful, witty, brave, dedicated, passionate, patient, respectful, and, above all, generous. Above all else, she will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to furthering the rights of women locally, nationally, and globally.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Genie, and a brother, Bernie; and is survived by her two daughters Barb Damon (Greg) and Sandy Meyers (Daryle), two grandchildren, Scott and Hayden Meyers, and her sister, Karen Farrington (John) and children.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any of the organizations listed above, the many entities that she championed that may have been inadvertently overlooked in this space, or to any organization you feel honors Alice’s spirit. Please join us for an open house happy hour to raise a glass in celebration of Alice, on Friday, October 13, 2023, between 4pm and 7pm, at Ernesto’s Italian Restaurant, 8544 SW Apple Way, Portland, OR 97225.

RSVP is not mandatory, but respectfully requested to allow the family to get an estimated headcount to share with the restaurant. Alice( and family) were our neighbors on Dover for many years. I wil never forget that Allice took time to teach me to drive. We did one or two days. I think I scared her when I turned our coner and proced up onto the curve. In later years I had the privilege to stay at the house and care for house and the dogs while they went on a few trips. Alice, I will always remember 💖. Thanks for being apart of my life . You have wonderful daughters always have always will. I’ll be there to lift a glass.

Alice was a wonderful person who made a great lawyer. She gained the respect of many in the legal community and she will be missed. I hope others, in her memory, will follow her grace and kindness she showed to many others.

Alice was the most wonderful and special Zontian I had the pleasure of knowing for years. Whenever I had a question concerning parlimentary proceedure or just a simple conversation, Alice was there. She trully was a lady who put a permanent footprint wherever she went. I will miss her spunkiness and sweet smile. May the Lord bless her family and give them strengh to endure their sorrow. A donation to my local animal shelter (Saving Grace) will be mailed in Alices memory. Blessings, Muriel Richardson, Roseburg, Oregon
