Alice Gardner Obituary
Alice Marlene Hagen was the third child and only daughter of Oscar N. Hagen and Myrtle Johnson Hagen. She was born in Northfield, Minnesota and baptized at Trondheim Lutheran Church in Lonsdale, MN where her mother had also been baptized. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. In 1941 the family left Minnesota and moved to Oregon. Living at Guilds Lake, Alice attended Linnton Elementary and Lincoln High School where she excelled at sports earning the teams Most Valuable player designation for both basketball and softball. After moving to Beaverton, she graduated high school in 1953. Alice had many lifelong friends from the years in Guilds Lake and she loved catching up with them as the years passed. Alice worked at JC Penney at the Lloyd Center for nearly two decades. She enjoyed selling fine jewelry and made many friends in her years at Penneys.
Alice married Fred G. Powell and together they had two daughters and two sons. Later she married Tom N Gardner. A gifted athlete, bowling a 300 game was a proud moment for her and her teammates, she loved playing golf and was seen frequently on the golf course near her home in Wamic, Oregon. Alice and Tom loved visiting Lynda in Hawaii, once planning a trip to surprise Lynda, but the surprise was on them as when they arrived Lynda was in Europe! Alice loved to travel with her mother to Sisters, Oregon to visit her son Kelly and his family or driving to Idaho to visit Laurie Anns family. Alice especially loved her trips to Minnesota! Her entire extended family was still back home and she had such a good time laughing and visiting with her family, especially her much loved cousins. No doubt shes enjoying a good laugh with Sandy now, of course between softball games with her friends.
She enjoyed watching Rachel and Isaac play basketball and run track. She loved that Holly and Skybird both played softball. And was so very proud of Ocean making the high school State Golf team. Most of all she loved playing with her great grandchildren. Playing board games was especially fun for them all. She and great-granddaughter Shubi were great friends, watching movies, constructing huge dominoes structures that they would then knock down and just genuinely enjoying each others company. Even after her stroke she was so happy to be able to attend Hollys wedding in Kentucky and Maias wedding in Lebanon, Oregon.
Alice is survived by her children Laura Booth (Larry), of Vancouver, WA. Lynda Powell (John), of Portland, OR, Michael Powell (Terry), of Gresham, OR, Kelly Powell (Molly) of Sisters, OR; grandchildren Rachel Lewis MacCumbee (Scott), Isaac Hall (Melissa), Eryn Meyer, Skybird Blackowl (Lowicha), Stephanie Bailey (Don), Chris Galego (Koryn), Ocean Yap-Powell, Holly Zirnheld (Sam), and Maia VanSpreybrock (Seth). Great grandchildren Anthony, Reed, Brayden, Haley, DKojah, Tashubi, Kenji, Kingston, Haluma, Wiconi, Wasu Rose, Donald, Henry, Kiley, Emma, Wells and Otto. And great-great granddaughter Aurora. Nieces Debra Baldwin and Susan Hagen and nephews Ken, Scott and Keith Hagen and her many Minnesota cousins.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Lowell and Norman, and husband Tom. All interred at Riverview Abbey.
A Funeral Service will be held at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home Chapel, 319 S. Taylors Ferry Road, Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at 11AM. A Committal Service will follow at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum. A reception will be held at Riverview Abbey following the Committal Service.
