Alice Miller Obituary

High School teacher, school board chair, preschool administrator, restaurant hostess, middle school counselor, “Mom” to many, Alice was an anchor upon which many lives were buoyed.  Born Alice Christine Schoedler in Tampa, Florida and raised in Chicago, Illinois, she found home in the Northwest: Seattle, Washington; Forest Grove, Oregon and Belfair, Washington.  She attended a year at the University of Chicago in 1945, amazed to learn that the Manhattan Project was going on literally underfoot.

She then moved to the University of Washington where she joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority and met and fell in love with a World War II Marine Corps veteran, Max Miller.  They were married in 1949 in Seattle.  In 1957 they bought a small cabin on Hood Canal which was the place they loved and would become their permanent residence in 1996, interrupted only by annual sojourns to Palm Desert, California.  Also in 1957, Max, Jr. was born.  In 1961, they moved to Forest Grove, Oregon, eventually settling on a hill above the community of Dilley, where they lived until 1996.

In 1968 Christine Francis (Wilde) was born.  After Max Sr. died in 2014, Alice became the matriarch of Sunset Beach on Hood Canal, where she lived independently, with the help of friends, through her 94th birthday.  Her failing health sent her back to be near family in Oregon in December of 2021.  She is survived by Max, Jr. (Lori), Christine (Michael Wilde); grandchildren Ashley (Christopher McClellan), Dakotah and Calgarie; great-grandchildren, Wesley and Wyatt.  Special thanks to the Pap family, and Marge and Curtis at Legacy Hospice, who helped comfort and guide her to her eternal home.  At her request, there will be no service.
