August 17, 1938 ~ August 26, 2023 (age 85)
Barbara Elizabeth Curry Dutton was born 8/17/1938. The first child of Bruce Yorke Curry and Catherine Elizabeth West Curry.
A Northeast Portland native, Barb attended Alameda grade school, Grant high school (class of 1956) and University of Oregon.
In 1961 Barb married Matthew J. Dutton and they had 4 children. Their marriage didn’t last but they remained connected for life.
Barbara worked for the Portland Public Schools for 25 years. Once retired, Barb moved to Lake Oswego with daughter Jennifer’s family and volunteered at the Albertina Kerr restaurant in NE Portland.
Barb made friends everywhere she went: Alpha Phi Sorority at U of O, Bridge Group, Rose City “Good Group”, Bunco Group, PPS work family, friends in the baseball stands, friends at Manzana, friends at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center, friends of her children and grandchildren. All were life-long and treasured relationships.
According to friends and family Barb was a character, a spark, a legend, a pistol and a bad***. There is no way she could ever be forgotten.
Barb’s love for life will live on in all that knew her, especially in her siblings, Patricia Curry Weigel, Rick (Darla) Curry, Children: Matthew, Christopher, Jennifer “JJ” (Stephen) Elske, Elizabeth “Libby” Dutton (Karl Johnson) Grandchildren (who were the absolute loves of her life): Dutton, Riley and McDermott Elske.
A private burial at Lone Fir Cemetery is planned. Please stay tuned for information on a “Barb Party” which will be posted on the Riverview Abbey memorial site.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center or Legacy Hospice in Barb’s name.
Please visit the guestbook portion of this site and enter a special memory or message. Thank you.

When I came over to help Barb one day with some personal training for her muscles, she said, “Well, I guess it’s better to give you money than give it to the Casino!†🤣 I loved her pink UGG boots and her sassy awesome present wrapping self! I hope to make as big of an impression on people as Barb made on me. Cheers to a life well lived! 💕

Barbie was at my High School graduation, and my wedding..She loved to be the life of the party, she will be greatly missed but will be forever in our hearts..
Cheers Barbie!!!!
I worked at Albertina Kerr with Barb…she was a receptionist and the first person people saw when coming to lunch. Her happy smile and welcoming spirit were truly a gift to all of us. It was good to be in her world at Albertinas Place. My thoughts are with your family.
My sisters and I have known Barbara most of our lives…. I remember when she, Matt, and babies Matt and Chris moved in across the street on NE 18th. We thought she was so glamorous! I used to clean their house and babysit for $0.50 an hour! Later, she and Matt were over the moon with the births of JJ and Libby. After they moved to NE Sacramento we still saw Barb often as she was my favorite of the “bridge club ladies†that our mom was a part of (she was also the baby of the group!).
Barbara always took an interest in our lives and you could just tell she cared about us…as a teenager and later as an adult, that meant alot. Matt, Chris, JJ, and Libby: your mom was a very special person and we loved her so much.
I worked with Barbara for several years at Mt. Tabor Middle School. We were a working team in the office. She was fun to be with. I saw her once at the store after I retired. She was much the same, a joyful, friendly person. I send my condolences to her family. Mavis Peterson Kvernvik
The Farmer family (including ex-husband, Bob) Mitch, Dan, Brett, Lori, Matt, Mike and Tonya) met Barbara and her family through the Rose City Little League program. She was a mover and shaker and was involved in many things. I think I worked with her in “The Wagon.” One never forgets Barbara.
I’m sorry for your loss, kids. So hard to lose one’s mom, but I’m sure you have a host of good memories and she will live on in your hearts forever.
Barbara was the secretary in the Wilson Cluster DOI office when I was the Instructional Specialist. She was such fun to work with and was so helpful. We had a great time working together and being friends. Condolences to her family.
The only reason I got a job in PPS was because Barbra shoved my resume in front of any principal she saw. I’m now 26 years in -and will forever be grateful! You will be missed by so many.
I had many interactions with Barbara through our years together working for
Portland Public Schools. She was always loyal to her bosses and her job, but even in our serious moments, with just a few words, she could crack me up! I was pleased to meet up with her again while she was volunteering at Albertina Kerr where she welcomed all with her same bright, friendly manner!
My memories go way back to “Bridge Club” gatherings and times spent with the Currys and Cooks at Ocean Lake. That was quite a group. Your Mom was such a blessing to my Mom and I feel that
Barb had that same wonderful spirit. Trisha and Ricky, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Barbara’s departure leaves a void in all of the lives she touched. I knew Barbara because she was my cousin, so there was a lot of fun history. I remember her wedding (she was 10 years older). When I moved to Portland in the 80’s, she and Tricia and I touched bases just a few times. Her warmth, kindness, and sense of humor were memorable. She reveled in the joy of her children, and we reveled in the joy she brought us! My sister Whitney lives in Lake Oswego and was lucky enough to see her and JJ every so often. I moved back to Spokane but I never stopped smiling when I thought of Barbara. I know her family and friends will find solace in the legacy left behind and the lives she enriched.
I’m so sorry to hear about aunt Barb. She was always so happy and kind to me.
