August 2, 1932 ~ May 5, 2018 (age 85)
Barbara Vaughan Parshley, age 85, passed away May 5, 2018.
Bobbie was born in Springfield, Mass., to Gladys and Donald Vaughan. Her intelligence showed early. After missing a year of school with polio, she actually skipped a grade. She demonstrated this initiative in other areas too. She was the one to ask her future husband, Philip Parshley, to a Chaffee School dance. The two married June 20, 1953, while she was studying at Mount Holyoke, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She later earned her Masters in Education at Harvard and joined the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization that provides educational opportunities for women.
Bobbie’s support for her husband and four children made a lot of things possible as the growing family moved to Hanover, N.H., Boston, Wichita, and finally, Portland. “You’re OK,” she told her children under many circumstances. “You can do this.” She and Philip traveled widely, visiting all seven continents. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary this spring. She is also survived by five granddaughters.
