March 12, 1930 ~ September 27, 2016 (age 86)
After high school Beverly went to the University of Oregon. During a freshman dance during her first week on campus, she met a football player for the Ducks named Douglas Coghill, who was smitten by her beauty and striking red hair. They were married the following year. Doug joined the Navy during the Korean War and his job as a control tower operator brought them to Whidbey Island, Washington, where their first two children, DeAnn and Teresa were born. After Doug’s discharge from the Navy the family moved to southern California where Doug worked for Esco Steel Corporation and Beverly was a homemaker for several years. Their son, David, was born in Anaheim, California, where they had their first home.
Beverly was involved in many activities and played bridge on a regular basis with her friends. She worked part time at John Robert Powers Modeling School, did volunteer work at a local hospital, was a member of the Orange Women’s Club and the Republican Women’s Club.
Doug was transferred back to Portland in 1971, while working as a Sales Manager for Esco and the family moved to Lake Oswego. The family was involved in water skiing, boating on the lake and parties, especially on the Fourth of July, Beverly’s favorite holiday, (aside from Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.). Beverly loved to decorate her home for every holiday and have family gatherings. The family was also involved in supporting their kid’s activities and sports, particularly David’s baseball, which ultimately led to a scholarship for the University of Oregon Ducks baseball team and a career in professional baseball.
During this time Beverly was also active in the Assistance League, the Women’s Club at the Lake Oswego golf course and volunteering for the zoo, bringing reptiles to classrooms across the Portland area.
After David went off to college Beverly began working as the Office Manager for the Kerr Center for Handicapped Kids, which she found very rewarding. She eventually started her own business called Bev’s Secretarial Service, which she ran for several years. Her husband, Douglas Coghill, passed away last December after 65 years of marriage. Beverly’s health declined over the last year and she missed Doug very much. She leaves behind her daughter, Teresa Gooley (son-in-law David), son, David Coghill (daughter-in-law Ann), grandchildren Meghan Groves, Jason Schnepple, Douglas MacEwan, Jonathan Gooley, Sarah Coghill, Michelle Coghill and James Coghill. She also had three great-grandchildren, Logan, Rylee and Lucas, who she enjoyed very much! Her daughter, DeAnn, passed away four years ago.
There will be no service, but the family will have a private celebration of her life. Scholarships under the name “Douglas and Beverly Coghill” are being arranged at both Roosevelt High School and North Medford High School (Doug’s alma mater). In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the scholarships referenced above.
You can still show your support by sending flowers directly to the family, or by planting a memorial tree in the memory of Beverly Coghill
