Bonnie Sherman Obituary

Bonnie Jeanne Sherman of Portland, OR, passed away on June 26, 2024 at the age of 78. Known for her unwavering kindness and gentle spirit, Bonnie touched the lives of many through her dedication to family, education, and lifelong passions.

Bonnie was born on June 16, 1946 to Ida and Archibald Erskine in Seattle, WA. Bonnie grew up amidst a bustling extended family in West Seattle and Burien. She attended Highline High School and went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a degree in Sociology in 1968. In 1969, she married Bill Sherman and embarked on a journey that would include settling in Kent, WA and raising two daughters, Cindy born in 1971 and Marilyn, born in 1975.

Bonnie’s professional life was marked by her deep commitment to education and community service. After her daughters were in elementary school, she worked as an instructional aide for the Kent School District. Her career path led her to Green River Community College, where she found her true calling, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults. She pursued her passion further by obtaining a master’s degree from Seattle University, enriching the lives of countless students over the years.

In her free time, Bonnie found joy in various hobbies and interests. She was an avid reader and cherished her long-standing book club with close friends spanning several decades. Her skillful hands crafted beautiful sewn creations, from doll clothes in her early years to Gunne Sax dresses for her daughters in the 80s, to her daughter Marilyn’s wedding dress in 2003. Her love for travel and history, particularly her Scandinavian heritage, inspired cherished adventures and learning experiences. Bonnie’s presence will live on through recipes she passed along to her children, such as her signature lasagna and holiday treats like pecan sandies and Christmas present fudge.

Bonnie is predeceased by her parents, Ida and Archibald and her brother Ronald.

She is survived by her daughters Cindy (Nolan) and Marilyn (Marc); grandchildren Natalie, Courtney and Casey, and her brothers Stanley and Stephen.

Bonnie will be remembered fondly for her patience, generosity, (stubbornness) and deep compassion for others. Her legacy of love and dedication to family, education, and community will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Bonnie will be privately laid to rest in Riverview Abbey Mausoleum, Rhododendron Corridor.

The family would like to thank Magdalena Baxter at La Bella Vila Senior Care and Tenderly Hospice
