Carole Rapp Obituary

Carole Marie Rapp was born on March 19, 1934 in Oregon City, Oregon and died at the age of 81 on February 21, 2016 in Clackamas, Oregon.

Carole was born in 1934 during a time of the depression. Her family moved to Alaska looking for a better job, but then came back to Oregon and settled in the Bonny Slope area of Beaverton.

It was in High School that she met Al Krueger and married September 1952. Within the next 6 years, they had 3 very loved children. Sue, Richard (Dick) and Nancy. Carole stayed busy being a farmers wife and mother, including shuffling children to and from 4H meetings, knitting classes, driving to county fairs with bales of straw in the back of station wagon, along with prize winning Onions and Petunia’s!! She was a busy woman! Mom and dad divorced in 1970…..

Carole met Charles Rapp and married in 1972. Charlie was in Banking and enjoyed plants of all kinds. Charlie introduced mom to backpacking and hiking! (I remember one particular hike that I attended that we were at the top of a tall mountain with a killer view…mom brought out a zip lock bag with powder, added some of our drinking water…squished it around and passed it around the three of us with a spoon. That was the BEST chocolate pudding I had EVER tasted!! Later at home I asked her about the recipe.. and she told me that she added powdered milk and espresso powder…DANG!!!)

Charles and Carole Rapp were HIGHLY involved with flower clubs. They joined the Villa Garden Club, Portland District, in 1982. Carole was the President of the club from 1986-1988. She was awarded OSFGC (Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs) STATE LIFE MEMBERSHIP. Villa Garden Club awarded this to mom in her honor for their State Life Award! (its a big deal!!) Later, mom was awarded the NATIONAL Life Award “This is the HIGHEST HONOR a member of a Federal Garden Club can receive!!” Over the years she held many offices and was involved with many committees. She NEVER missed ONE of the bi-yearly plant sales unless she was hospitalized!! She was also Highly active in both District and State levels, attending many State Conventions. Mom also took classes on being a Flower Designer and later Judge!

She would set up standard flower shows all around the Portland Metro area, not only for flower clubs, but also for the AMERICAN FUSHIA SOCIETY where she was a CERTIFIED Judge. The Rapp’s held the Presidential office of the American Fuchsia Society from 88 thru 92. (when asking for information…a current member told me of when she attended her first meeting 25 years ago, there was a bit of disagreement on the floor, and Carole took back control of the meeting in a “stern” voice and she then decided THIS is what she wanted…a meeting that was ran right! Later on, when this member and mom were out of town for a function, mom came to her and told her…”come up stairs to my room…I have Chocolates filled with LIQUER!”)

If she was not judging, she was entering and won many Blue ribbons along the way. Living with her and her basement filled with Fuchsia starts, design vases and interesting sticks was interesting!! Every spring, we would carry plants outside….followed with every fall carrying them back downstairs!

After Charlie’s death, mom moved into Town Center Village where she was highly active STILL with Gardens. She would find a piece of soil and ask if she could plant. She was given Free Will! Wendy often said, “Go for it Carole, we will reimburse you!” Oh how she enjoyed watching all of her plants around the complex!!

Carole wanted to travel and asked a lady at garden club if she would like to travel toooo…..and off they went!!! Mom and Marian joined the Philadelphian travel group and traveled!!! Panama Canal, Cook Islands, Mississippi River, East Coast during the fall tree color changes….You name it she went! (I was to a story from another trip that mom took…a cruise from Seattle to Vancouver BC and at one Ports of Call, a plane ride with views of the Harbor was offered. Mom says, Lets GO! Her roommate said nah..not for me! She watched as Mom boarded the plane, took off and later got off that plane with a big smile on her face. Nothing stopped Carole Rapp!!!

Mom also took Dance classes with a gentleman that she met. They followed one certain band from Elk club to Elk club dancing and kicking up their heels!! Mom became very close to his family, of which they also became very close to mom. Love flowed freely both directions. Mom was Loved by the Maoshofsky family. I will personally never forget the many times that mom would be in the hospital, and a staff member would bring me Jerry, saying “I believe he belongs to YOU?” Oh how Jerry Loved her!!

The last few years she has been in charge of assigning tomato plots for some of the residences. Mom planted DIFFERENT lettuces and then shared a leaf with other gardeners to taste the difference! She ALWAY had a baggy of herbs or leaves from one thing or another… While planning moms memorial Monday with the Activities Director, I learned that mom was working with the chefs to get a fresh Herb garden planted…..and they ARE!!

Mom LOVED the staff at TCV….and equally, they loved HER! If you ever get a chance to visit TCV ask to see Carole’s Mural….yes, mom modeled for a mural in her swimsuit!! Its located in the Fountains building.

Mom was a flower club Judge for many, MANY years and traveled with Charlie up and down the West Coast. They were packed and were getting ready to judge in the Seattle area when Charlie woke in the middle of the night looking for his FAVORITE jammies….he never woke the next morning. Instead of being buried in a suit that he wore 5-6 days a week, he wore those jammies. Therefore, that is the reason Mom is in Her Favorite Red Flannel jammies…

One reply on “Carole Rapp”

To the Rapp family please accept my deepest condolence during your time of loss. Even though death has been a part of life we still dont get used to it even though it is expected. We do have a hope because as (Job 14:13-15) brings out there is a limited time until God calls those in the grave to live again because He longs for the work of his hands, we are the work of his hands. He will call and our loved ones will answer. This is a hope that is sure, because Jesus was resurrected.
Sincerely, Lynn
