January 30, 1917 ~ December 22, 2012 (age 95)
He spent much of his adult life as a hotel bellman and in other work in the hospitality and farm and aircraft industries, working and living across the country in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, New York and elsewhere. In 1961, he married Mae Hill. She died in 1992. In 2005, he married Lillian White. She died in 2010.
He was predeceased by his parents; and four older brothers. Survivors include stepdaughters, Marilyn Kuhl of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Corinne Heredia of Los Angeles and Judith Pratt of South Beloit, Illinois, a stepson-in-law, Joe Frazier of Portland; and close family friend, Victor Bitzer of Portland.
He was a frequent visitor to Loaves and Fishes, Portland’s Hollywood Senior Center and the Salvation Army. He was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 40 years. Friends will recall his unassuming nature, his love of animals and the colorful berets he liked to wear at a jaunty angle. He had been in a care facility in recent years. He tried three times to enlist in the Army during WWII but was turned down.
Family and friends would like to thank the management and staff at Eunice’s Adult Care Home in Portland for their attention to Clarence, especially in his last months.
A memorial service will be at Sunnyside Adventist Church, 10510 SE Market St, Portland at 11 a.m. Sunday, January 13. Entombment has taken place. Riverview Abbey was in charge of arrangements.
Contributions in his memory may be made to Loaves and Fishes, the Salvation Army, the Hollywood Senior Center or his church.
