David Stevenson Obituary

David Robert Stevenson, a man of boundless energy, deep passions, and gentle kindness passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. at Touchmark in the West Hills, Portland. He was 72 years old. His loving niece, Lisa, was by his side in his final hours as he transitioned into the next chapter of his journey.

Dave was born on November 9, 1952, in Harvey, Illinois, to Charles and Eleanor “Ellie” Stevenson. As the youngest of three siblings, he spent his formative years in Idaho Falls, where his bright mind and curious spirit took root. Dave pursued his love of learning at the University of Chicago and later at Stanford University, where he studied mathematics and met the love of his life, Lynn. Their connection would become the foundation of an extraordinary life together.

In 1981, Dave discovered his passion for long-distance running, a pursuit that would dene much of his life. Over the years, he completed more than 100 marathons and eight 100-mile races, including six finishes at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run—one of which earned him a spot in the top ten. Dave’s determination and endurance were matched only by his joy in the journey, whether pounding the pavement or blazing trails through the wilderness.

Dave and Lynn were married on June 10, 1989, in Los Altos Hills, California, celebrating a partnership that would take them on adventures across the globe. In 1991, they moved to Springfield, Oregon, where they planted roots—quite literally—by establishing a commercial blueberry farm. Their time on the farm was made all the sweeter by the companionship of six cherished dogs: Luka, Gypsy, and Denali, majestic Great Pyrenees; Clancy and Ciara, affectionate Bernese Mountain Dogs; and Ashland, a spirited Husky/German Shepherd mix. Dave’s love for these animals was as expansive as his love for the music that filled their home. His tremendous collection was a reaction of his eclectic taste and his ability to find beauty in the stories carried by the music.

In their years together, Dave and Lynn embraced a shared passion for travel, often exploring the world through hiking tours. From the sunlit hills of Tuscany and Provence to the rugged coastlines of England (including the 200 mile Coast to Coast Trail across all of England). From the ancient landscapes of Spain and Sicily to the breathtaking trails of Mont Blanc, they walked through life together. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alan and sister Betsy, and his nephew Adam. Dave is survived by his wife Lynnor, his nieces Alyson, Lisa, Kim and Kayleigh, his nephews James and Nathan and their children. Dave and his parents were long time supporters of The Nature Conservancy. Donations would support the excellent work they are doing in the world.
