February 16, 1920 ~ October 22, 2015 (age 95)
Dave was a member of the “greatest generation.” He started work in the Depression at age 11 at Broadmoor Golf Course in 1931. His first job sparked a passion for playing golf that lasted until the final month of his life.
Dave was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, and he ultimately achieved the rank of master sergeant. The ship transporting him across the English Channel was sunk by the Germans in December 1944. He took part in the campaign for the Rhineland during the following year. By July 1945, Dave reached the German capital. He established the first American Army office within Berlin as a part of the occupation forces.
While in Paris in 1945, Dave met Suzanne Mariotto, a young Frenchwoman who became the love of his life. They were married for 68 years until Suzie passed away in 2014. After the war, they moved to Eugene where Dave earned an accounting degree, an M.B.A. degree and was the account- ing student of the year in 1950 at the University of Oregon. After finishing school, Dave and Suzie moved to Portland where they raised four boys. Dave worked as a C.P.A. for two decades with a firm that became a part of Deloitte & Touche. He became the vice president for corporate development at Columbia in 1969. He worked at Columbia until he semi-retired in 1979. He then became a director of Allied Forest Products, a successor venture to Columbia.
Dave volunteered at First Presbyterian Church in Portland and over the years, he held the positions of deacon, elder, trustee and treasurer at the church. He became a director and president of Portland Golf Club where he spent much time enjoying golf and bridge. In full retirement, he savored playing golf and bowling with his children and grand-children.
Dave is survived by his sons, Patrick (Sandy), Ronald (Nancy) and Terence; and grandchildren, James, Elyse, Christine and Laura.
His beloved son and companion, David, predeceased him in 2012.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 S.W. Alder St., Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oregon Special Olympics.
