Delburt Bauer Obituary

Delburt R. Bauer passed away Friday, May 15 at the age of 83. He was born on Parrett Mountain in Newberg, Oregon to John and Esther (Schaad) Bauer. He was the eldest of three boys.

Del met his wife of 61 years, Joanne (Sather) Bauer, while both were attending Newberg High School. He was active in FFA and was a district winner in the Better Farming Contest. He served as a Marine in Korea for two years during the Korean Conflict. He returned home in 1953 and married his high school sweetheart. They settled in Canby, Oregon and had two children. He was named Oregon’s Outstanding Electrical Apprentice for 1956 and worked for W.R. Grasle electrical contractors for 40 years on wiring jobs throughout the Northwest, including Bonneville Dam, Lloyd Center and Memorial Coliseum.

After retirement, he set up a small metal-recycling business, calling it Micyde Industries, telling Joanne that he would keep his junk business to “my side” of the property.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, vegetable gardening, putting together puzzles, playing pinochle and cribbage, reading Westerns, and traveling. Travel included camping and family road trips around Oregon and later, retirement cruises to far-flung locales including Norway, the Mediterranean and East Asia.

Del was a hard-worker and a do-it-yourselfer, extensively remodeling his house over the years and always ready to help his children and friends on their house projects. He was an avid collector of Beam bottles, stamps, political buttons, and matchboxes. Belonging to the Beam bottle-collecting club was a source of much enjoyment to him. He was active in the early Canby Midget and Pigmy baseball leagues, becoming president of the Canby Baseball Commission. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, coaching baseball, leading an electrical 4-H group, bowling on a team with his granddaughter, and hiring his grandson to work with him after school and summers in his recycling business.

Del is survived by his wife Joanne (Sather) Bauer; children, son William and wife Cindy (Doyle) Bauer, daughter Judy and husband Mark Griffith; grandchildren Vesna Stuchly, Alex Bauer, Amanda Bauer; great-granddaughter Milena Bouarab; and brothers Wilbur and David and their wives.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30 at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice.

Dear Aunt Joanne, my sincere condolences. Uncle Del will be greatly missed. You have had a wonderful love story with your high school sweetheart and many wonderful memories to hold dear. Bill, Judy, Mark, Vesna, Alex & Amanda – You have had the fortune of having a wonderful Father and Grandfather who loved his family very much. I am fortunate to have fond memories as well. I enjoyed his wonderful smile, family gatherings, his peacocks and playing golf together. Rest in Peace – love to you all.
