Diane Pyle Obituary

Diane passed away peacefully in her apartment at the age of 83. She was born in Aberdeen, Washington, the first of two children to Fred and Wynne Goddard. As a young girl she enjoyed trips to Alderbrook on Hood Canal where she clammed, went swimming and rode horses. She hunted and fished with her father and was on the high school shooting team. She graduated with honors from Weatherwax High School in 1950. Diane entered the University of Oregon as a freshman in 1950, graduating with a degree in history in 1954. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.

She met her late husband, John “Jack” Pyle while attending the university. They were married following her graduation from school. Their marriage lasted 60 ½ years. Their first home was in Havre, Montana where Jack served in the Air Force and Diane taught school for 2 years. Following Jack’s discharge from service, they moved to La Grande, where their first son, John was born. They moved again in 1958 to Eugene and made the Emerald city their home for the next 55 years. Her second son, Robert (1960) and daughter, Sally (1964) both were born in Eugene.

Diane volunteered at Skipworth Juvenile Home, was a member of Junior League, the Colony Dance Club and played bridge with passionate friends for nearly 40 years. She enjoyed Book Club, was a member of the Eugene Home Science Club and attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church where she was a member of the choir, Lay reader, Sr. Warden and worked on the vestry. She was selected to be on the Search Committee and worked with the Bishop at the Oregon Episcopal Archdiocese in Portland.

She attended more athletic events throughout her life than one could possibly imagine. She was passionate about her family, reading, traveling and spending time at the family cabin at Mercer Lake. She rode horses well into her seventies, gardened, cooked, and favored seafood above any other culinary delight. She loved to sing, play music and most especially, spending time with the love of her life, Jack. Diane and Jack traveled throughout the world including memorable trips to Europe, China, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska and California. She was an exceptional mother who gave freely of her time, energy and heart.

She precedes her husband, Jack in death and is survived by her children, John (Suzanne), Robert (Barry) and Sally (John C. Kootnekoff); grandchildren, David, Molly, Hannah, Jackson, Emily, Benjamin; and brother, John (Danville, California).

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Eugene.

Remembrances may be made to Peace Health Hospital.
