January 18, 1922 ~ September 2, 2016 (age 94)
Donald Gerard Finn was ninety-four years old when he died at home on September 2nd, 2016. His wife of 55 years, Rita Theresa Finn nee Humpert, died January 24, 2004 at the age of 81. Both lived in Portland, Oregon. They had three children together, Gregory Gerard Finn, Dennis John Finn and Brian Thomas Finn (died January 30, 2014).
Don contributed much to his family, community and his country. Don and Rita built a house in 1953 and lived there until they died, raising their three children there. They built a pool, which was a source of fun for not only their family, but other children and adults in the neighborhood who spent many enjoyable hours swimming and relaxing there. Don and Rita raised their children with a strong sense of morality and a thirst for knowledge. He joined the Oregon National Guard in the 1930s when he was fifteen by fibbing a bit about his age and later fought in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII for the United States Army. After the war he sold auto parts, eventually owning SouthWest Auto Parts, which he and his wife ran for several years, with occasional help from their children. Don was past President and Treasurer for the Portland State University Retired Associates. He also volunteered for many jobs helping other members of the community, supporting activities such as the Loaves and Fishes and local elections. He was an active member of St. Clare parish for many years.
Don was friendly, humorous and outgoing. He was also a great story teller, loved by his family, relatives and neighbors and will be greatly missed.
