January 18, 1929 ~ March 10, 2016 (age 87)
Dr. Adel Fahmy Matar passed away in the early hours of March 10th, 2016. He had been surrounded by family and crossed over peacefully in his sleep.
Dr. Matar was born on January 18th, 1929 in Giza, Egypt to loving parents AbdelHamid Matar and Nabila Sherbini. After receiving a doctorate degree in thoracic surgery in Egypt, he chose to continue his education to a higher level of credential in England and Ireland, and earned an additional degree at the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons in 1962.
It was while advancing his studies in the UK that he met his bride, Maureen Kelly of Liverpool, England, who would become Maureen Matar in 1963 when they were wed in Ireland.
After completing his studies, and a short stint in Toronto, the couple moved to Portland, Oregon in 1968, where they would settle permanently to begin a new life, career, and family.
In addition to being a highly accomplished surgeon, Dr. Matar was a sports car enthusiast, squash player, and avid (perhaps a gross understatement) salmon fisherman, which became his full-time preoccupation after retiring from his medical practice in 1992.
Dr. Matar’s passion and determination to achieve in all endeavors was fierce and unrelenting, and exceeded only by unwavering devotion to his family.
Dr Adel Fahmy Matar is survived by his wife Maureen, his son Adam and daughter-in-Law danielle, his sisters Amira and Sawsan, and his two grandchildren Nabila and Hendrix. He is preceded in death by his sisters Alaaya, Awatif, and Somaya, and his beloved son Tarek.
In lieu of flowers of gifts, donations may be made in his name to the Coastal Conservation Association of Oregon, a Non-Profit group which works to protect salmon fisheries throughout the state.
