March 1, 1941 ~ May 19, 2012 (age 71)
Jorge Crosa died on May 19, 2012 while grocery shopping in his favorite aisle, looking for cheese. Although he had been suffering from complications of diabetes for some time, nobody expected Jorge’s sudden death. He loved life and had many plans for the future, for his family, for music and for science.
Jorge was born In Buenos Aires, Argentina and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires. Together with his wife, Lidia, he immigrated to the United States in 1972 to work as a postdoctoral fellow in Washington. He followed his mentor, Dr. Stanley Falkow, to the University of Washington in Seattle, and in 1981 Jorge became an Assistant Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University in the Department of Microbiology, working enthusiastically in his research and teaching until the day of his death.
He leaves his mother, Lela; his wife of 44 years, Lidia; daughter, Giselle; sons, Nicholas and Paul; sister, Norma and niece, Laura. They all miss him enormously.
Jorge’s friends and colleagues at OHSU at the department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology will be hosting a memorial seminar in his remembrance.
The seminar will be Friday, June 29, at 4 p.m. at the OHSU Old Library, with a reception immediately afterward. Please RSVP to mmi@ohsu.edu, and forward these details to anyone who may be interested in attending.

A sympathy card has been sent to the family of Dr. Jorge H. Crosa c/o Riverview Abbey Funeral Home funeral home.
Jorge was a mentor of great wisdom, kindness, and old world charm. He will be remembered by his students with great warmth, by his peers with respect, and by the many people whose lives were affected by his insightful science, with gratitude. Our smiles are less bright, our walk less quick, and our hearts more heavy because Jorge is no longer among us. Let’s hope that the legacy of trainees he left behind will continue his important work and infuse their students with the same work ethic and dedication that Jorge had. Today, the light at OHSU has dimmed a bit. May Jorge’s family and close friends take peace and comfort in the knowledge that he loved you all, above all else.
I read with great sadness of the passing of Jorge. He was such a kind, funny person with a great love of science and life. He will be greatly missed by all of us in the “iron” community.
My deepest, heart-felt sympathies to his family.
Dear Lidia and family,
We were very sad to hear about Jorge. He was a fun and generous person and a great colleague in the iron field. He will be missed greatly. Please accept our condolences.
Sandy and Tim
