January 1, 1916 ~ January 19, 2013 (age 97)
He was born in Minneapolis and at a few months of age traveled with his parents, Arthur and Nell Dickerman to Spokane. The Dickerman family moved early to Oregon and he spent his grade school and high school years here in Portland, graduating from Franklin High School.
Earl was a machinist during the war and after until he, along with his wife, Grace, purchased the neighborhood grocery store. They successfully owned and operated Prescott Foods from 1948 through 1966. After taking a long vacation, they purchased B&M Hardware on Hawthorne Blvd. in 1967. They operated the hardware store until Earl’s retirement at the age of 70.
Earl and Grace traveled extensively with each other and with friends through England, Scotland, Ireland, Greece, Rome, Venice, Germany, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand, including several U.S. States. Earl loved life and loved his family. His greatest love was his wife, Grace, to whom he was married 74 years, before her passing in December of 2011.
He was a great role model for his children, grandkids and great-grandkids alike. Earl will be loved and remembered by the surviving family, his son, Wes Dickerman; daughter, Jan Harvey; daughter-in-law, Ann Dickerman; son-in-law, Ed Harvey; grandchildren, Mike Dickerman, Vicki Dickerman (Casey), Jason Luty (Brenda), Wade Dickerman, Leiah Greene (Sean); great-grandchildren, Derek Ritter, Brian Ritter, Danielle Dickerman, Jake Luty, Seliah Greene, Eliana Greene, Anisa Greene; and Earl’s younger brother, Brooks Dickerman; along with many extended family members and friends.
His laughter was contagious and endearing to those who knew him and his likable but shy personality made many friends. Our world became very quiet when Earl began to lose his memory from a stroke in early 2009. The family wants to thank Emerson House for their professional care and attention given him this last of 97 years.
