Ethel Mowry Obituary

Born nearly 100 years ago, Ethel Rebecca was the first child of the Rev. and Mrs. Chester P. Gates. She attended Buckman Elementary School and Washington High School. As a child she lived in Corvallis, Dallas, Day-ton, St. Johns and Portland. She was married to Charles Peters on May 14, 1938, at Ladd’s Addition Church, in a ceremony officiated by her father.

In 1990, Becky was widowed and on May 29, 1993 married her dear friend Al Mowry. Al and his late wife were long time friends of Becky and Chuck and had enjoyed golfing, picnicking and taking long drives in the country together. When they were newlyweds, Becky and Al got a good chuckle out of telling people they had been married for 104 years (pause for effect …), just not to each other.

Becky was always active in church, community and musical groups. She played the piano and sang in various choirs in the area. She also participated in Chautauqua programs on the old Williams School field, Allied Arts Club and was the pianist for the Buckman Elementary School orchestra. She belonged to Girl Reserves, Job’s Daughters (Sunnyside Chapter) and served as State President of Christian Endeavor. She was selected as Deacon of Oregon City Presbyterian Church. She and Chuck were avid supporters of West Linn High School’s athletic programs, particularly football and track.

Her work experiences included typing freight bills for East Side Freight terminal, receptionist/stenographer for Hughes and Co., Bake-Rite Bakeries, Lee Tires, Associated Insurance Company, Oregon City office of Sears & Roebuck and as Western Comfrey Office Manager.

For the past 7 years, Becky was a resident at Homewood Heights Assisted Living Center in Jennings Lodge. She enjoyed visits from family and friends and trips “off campus” to see family, sights and for shopping excursions.

Rebecca is preceded in death by her younger sister Viola (Gates) Lorenzini, grandson Michael Peters, her husband of 52 years, Charles Pe-ters and her husband of 12 years, Al Mowry. She is survived by her sons Philip and Clark Peters, grandchildren Diana (Peters) Ray, Scott Peters, Ron Peters, Stacey Peters, great-grandchildren Henry and Edward Ray, and Khalid, Kiya and Cayden Peters.
