Sister Farroel Richardson, SNJM, 90, died Aug. 9, 2022 in Lake Oswego, Ore. Virtual memorial is at 2 p.m., Aug. 25, and funeral at 11 a.m., Sept. 1, in Chapel of the Holy Names, Lake Oswego. For information, call 503.699.6713.
Daughter of Fay and Esther Moran Richardson, Farroel grew up in South Dakota and Seattle in a loving family, the ninth of 11 siblings. After graduating from Holy Names Academy, Seattle, she entered the Holy Names Sisters at Marylhurst, Ore., receiving the religious name Sister Marian Barbara.
For over 25 years Sister Farroel taught and administered in Holy Names elementary schools in Oregon and Washington. During this time, she completed an MS in Geography.
Leaving education, she received her Certification in Hospital Chaplaincy. In 1981 she joined the pastoral care department at St. Vincent Medical Center, Portland, eventually becoming its Director. Her work involved supervising 10 to 15 chaplains, serving on the hospital’s administrative team, and advocating for patients, their families and the hospital’s 2,500 employees. During this time, she was also on the National Association of Catholic Chaplains board and as well as the boards of Marylhurst University and Mary’s Woods
Retiring in 2001, Sister Farroel put her energies to volunteer activities, including a program she initiated at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, working with small groups of women to explore and reflect on their personal spirituality.
