Florence Schoessler was born in Turner Oregon to George and Theresa Doerfler. She was the oldest of four children: Doris, Raymond and John Doerfler. She graduated from Sacred Heart grade school and St. Stephen’s high school in Portland.
After graduation she worked for the Catholic Book store. During the war she worked for naval supply providing material for Kaiser Shipping. She then became a secretary and bookkeeper for 7 Dee’s Nursery. She married Leonard Schoessler in 1944 and had three children, Gregory (deceased), Edward and Mary Schoessler.
In 1962, she originated the Santa Claus cookie tree which decorated the US Bank Building during the Christmas season for several years. That soon developed into the family Santa Claus cookie tradition. She was in charge of the dining room for the annual St. Ignatius Italian dinner for several years and developed many organizational processes that are still in use today. She was active in St Ignatius parish, for 62 years. She sewed many vestments for the church.
She loved to dance and play pinochle and bunko. She treasured the time she had with family and friends and enjoyed traveling and being in a crowd.
Florence died on March 23rd.
