September 1, 1921 ~ June 2, 2016 (age 94)
His mother moved the family wherever she could find work as a teacher in Oregon. Fran fondly recalled childhood years spent in Terrebonne and Paisley before returning to Portland when he was in high school. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navys newly created Construction Battalion, nicknamed the “Seabees,” and was stationed in the Solomon Islands during WWII.
Fran’s post-service education continued at Pacific University in Forest Grove, where he met the love of his life, Jeanie Packer. Their 65-year marriage began September 5, 1948, and ended with Jeanie’s death in December 2013.
Fran worked for 20 years as a title examiner before finishing out his career as a tax appraiser for Multnomah County. Fran estimated that during his lifetime he owned over 100 cars, with the oldest being a 1903 Oldsmobile. He enjoyed watching the quarter midget races at Alpenrose Dairy for many years, perusing weekend garage sales for his next great treasure and sharing his favorite jokes.
Fran is survived by his children, Francine (Jon) Read, Jenine (Dennis) Treskey and William “Bill” Lynch; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend a service to celebrate his life and legacy at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016, at River View Cemetery Adams Memorial Chapel.
