Fred Edera Obituary

Born in New York on V.E. Day in 1945, Fred Edera displayed a keen sense of humor, even as a child.

His family moved to Brussels when he was in high school, and there he learned to appreciate fine dining and friendship.

In 1962, Fred arrived in Portland to attend Reed College and fully experience the Sixties. Except for two years of graduate school, Fred spent the rest of his life in Portland- first working as a woodworker, creating works of art in local businesses; running the family owned business, Generic Parts Service; and teaching and tutoring at local schools. His teaching expertise covered areas from wood shop to pre-Calculus. He was a beloved presence at Maplewood School, Catlin Gable School, and the Arbor School.

Fred was known for his smile, his enthusiasm, his love of music, and his unique sense of style. The sparkle in his eyes could light up a room, and even at the end his laughter could start a party.

Tonight I just happened to be Googling a few people I knew at Reed College when I discovered the unhappy news of Fred’s passing.

We lived in the same dorm for a year or two. On the evening of February 25, 1964, a bunch of us crowded around the radio in the room Fred shared with Tom Forstenzer, to listen to the first Cassius Clay v. Sonny Liston fight. Needless to say, we were all pulling for Clay.

I ran into Fred only once after he graduated, in San Francisco circa 1970, but he was one of the people from my Reed years who stuck in my memory. He was smart and funny, and had a slightly goofy quality that was really endearing. And he had Petula Clark records in French!

I extend my deepest condolences to Fred’s family and friends, along with a twinge of envy for those who had the pleasure of knowing him over the years.

Au revoir, Fred.

Peg: My heart is with you and Mia at this time. I did not knew Fred but it sounds as if he was a beloved member of his community and family. His struggle here is over. My prayer for you and your daughter is that peace slowly washes over you with the memories of a good husband and father. Love, Peggy
