November 18, 1927 ~ July 8, 2016 (age 88)
Gerry Pratt was born in British Columbia Canada, married Barbara June in 1950. Together they raised a family of 3 in Portland Oregon. He became a US citizen in 1954. His career started as a water boy for the Oregonian and he worked his way up to eventually become the business editor. It was while working for the Oregonian that he and Fred G. Meyer became friends. Mr. Meyer was his mentor and also close personal friend. Gerry was a true renaissance man. He worked as a writer for several newspapers in Portland; he had a radio program called All Things Considered, as well as several television shows: Gerry Pratt on Sunday, Watch Something Happen, Close-up and he was the original moderator of Town Hall on KATU, which were produced by Arlene Schnitzer.
There were numerous jobs and many volunteer hours at various groups in and around the Portland area. He supported many schools, businesses and administrations over the years including the Knight Cancer Foundation and Catholic Charities through St. Mary’s Cathedral, both of these were important to him because they were important to his wife, Barbara June. He dabbled at being an “angel investor” for several companies. He also sat on the board of directors at many organizations throughout his long life. For a while he was President of Fred Meyer Savings and Loan. After Mr. Fred G. Meyer passed Gerry Pratt became a member of the board of Meyer Memorial Trust. At Meyer Memorial Trust he constantly strived to see that Mr. Meyer’s vision for the trust was honored. After he retired from the Trust he devoted his time between his family and his passion for writing which allowed him to publish a couple of novels, along with other books and short stories.
There will be a Funeral Mass for Gerry on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Portland.
His family suggests in lieu of flowers remembrances be sent to the Knight Cancer Foundation, or to the Lewis and Clark College, Gerry Pratt Scholarship, or Catholic Charities through St. Mary’s Cathedral.
