April 12, 1923 ~ February 15, 2015 (age 91)
Gloria died peacefully Sunday afternoon, February 15, 2015, at the age of 91, surrounded by most of her family. Gloria was born April 12, 1923, in St. Paul, Minn., to Ruth Nelson Trantanella and Theodore Trantanella. She was of Italian and Swedish descent.
Gloria attended elementary and high school in St. Paul before enrolling at the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She worked for a year in a San Francisco department store before moving to Portland and joining The Oregonian newspaper, where she eventually became “Nancy Morris, Food Editor.” While at The Oregonian, she met another outdoor enthusiast, Harold “Bill” H. Keil, who covered skiing for the newspaper. They were married February 27, 1959, and honeymooned in Sun Valley, Idaho, which became a favorite destination of theirs.
In 1961, they started building a cabin in Government Camp at Mt. Hood. It was their weekend home for many years. After raising their two children, she enrolled in Portland State University to gain a teacher’s certificate and then taught in Portland Public Schools until retiring.
She had a lifelong interest in skiing, camping and hiking, She was a very active member of the Trails Club of Oregon. Gloria belonged to a bridge group that played regularly for nearly 50 years. Gardening and genealogy were other favorite pastimes. Bill and Gloria traveled extensively including trips through Europe, Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand. They also visited all 48 mainland U.S. states during several motor home trips. For her last 18 years, Gloria was afflicted with Parkinson’s disease which gradually limited her activities.
Besides her husband, Gloria is survived by her younger sister, Shirley Munson of Bayport, Minn.; sons, Dick (Kieran) and Greg (Claire); and grandchildren, Cecilia, Thomas, Virginia, Michael and Kevin.
She was preceded in death by her older sister, Jean Bebeau.
Gloria was a wonderful woman with many friends and interests. A service for her will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at The Madeleine Church Parish Hall Fireside Room, 3123 N.E. 24th Avenue, Portland. Lunch will follow.
