November 5, 1919 ~ January 14, 2012 (age 92)
Harold ‘Hal’ F. Bauer died January 14, 2012 at the age of 92. Hal was born on November 5, 1919 in Portland to Carl and Caroline Bauer.
Hal’s life was motivated by his family, friendships, faith and his undying belief in giving his time and resources to others. After graduating from Kenton Grade School in North Portland, he maintained contact with his surviving classmates over the next 77 years. He went on to graduate from Jefferson High. During his college days at University of Portland, he joined the Catholic faith which defined his place in humanity and taught him the importance of helping others.
After college, with World War II under way, he joined the Navy and attended officer candidate school. He served in the Atlantic and Europe and was discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant. That same year, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Zanotto. They married in 1947 and lived in the Portland and Milwaukie areas until Dott’s sudden death in 2004.
Over those years, Hal made many new friends through his work at American Steel, his church and the tireless volunteer work he did with St. Vincent DePaul and Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed his last months with frequent visits from old friends as he continued to make new friends; greeting everyone with his warm smile.
He survived by his son, Douglas Bauer (Debra Jo); his daughter, Rebecca Griswold; his grandchildren, Colin and Simon Bauer and Aimee Griswold; and his sisters, Lillian Cochran and Alice Barrett. His brother, Carl, predeceased him.
Rosary and Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie, OR.
