March 18, 1929 ~ May 3, 2017 (age 88)
Sis, a proud Portland native, graduate of the Catlin-Hillside School (now Catlin Gabel) and Smith College, married for 58 years to Edmund “Ned” Hayes, Jr. (d. 2009), mother of Peter Hayes (m. Pamela Speers Hayes) and Anna Hayes Levin (m. Peter Levin), and grandmother of Ben and Molly Hayes and Will and Ned Levin, died of heart failure May 3, 2017.
She lived for 62 years in the Healy Heights neighborhood, where she had a thriving garden and taught neighborhood kids how to tie their shoes and tell time. She was fond of all her neighbors, but the neighborhood dogs were her special friends. She loved skiing, tennis and outdoor adventures – and tending her investments.
With Ned, Sis supported numerous civic and charitable organizations, and her involvement in a variety of organizations was important to her, including the Friends of Timberline, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, and the Portland Garden Club.
Born into a family of journalists, her uncommon gifts were a quick wit and playfulness, and an ability to strike up conversations and create friendships with a wide range of people. She was intensely loyal to her many childhood buddies, who laughed with her and provided support throughout her life, including on multiple Cycle Oregon rides.
Honoring Sis’s wishes, there will be no service. A send-off picnic will be held instead between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017 at The Town Club, 2115 S.W. Salmon St. in Portland.
