Haru Furukawa Obituary

Haru (Teramura) Furukawa passed away in her sleep six months short of her 100th birthday. She was born in 1916 in Lents, Portland, to Uno and Kisuke Teramura. From the ages of 6 to 12 years she lived in Japan. She returned to Oregon to finish school and joined the family in farming.

In 1937, she married George H. Furukawa and they continued farming in the area. During WWII, they were sent to the Minidoka internment camp in Idaho from which they farmed for the war effort in Eastern Oregon. In 1946, she and George returned to their farm in Carver to build the Furukawa Farm until George passed away in 1991. Haru continued to live on the farm and more recently moved to West Hills Village Assisted Living facility.

She is survived by her brother, Yasu Teramura; and 16 nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted. She will be remembered for her sweetness, generosity, handicrafts, cooking and wonderful personality.

Haru was an active member of the Oregon Buddhist Temple. A funeral service for family and friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the Oregon Buddhist Temple, Portland with a burial to follow in Rose City Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Temple, the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Foundation or the Clackamas River Basin Council.
