James Harkins Obituary

James David “Jim” Harkins passed away May 12, 2017.
Jim was born 1936 in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late John and Hannah Venetta Harkins. After graduating from Charleston Catholic High School, he attended West Virginia State in Nitro, West Virginia, before enlisting in the Air Force. Following an honorary discharge, Jim’s career in the nascent information technology industry took him around the U.S. First stop was Houston, Texas, where he worked at Union Carbide and attended the University of Houston. Next was Ashland, Kentucky, where he worked at Ashland Oil, and in 1968 was named a Kentucky Colonel by then-Gov. Nunn. Following was a stint as VP of Information Services with Integon in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While at Integon, Jim attended an executive education program at Harvard Business School.

In 1988 Jim and Carol, his wife of 59 years, headed to Portland, where Jim served as President of Marketing One before he and Carol started and successfully operated their own Alpha Graphics print shop. Jim and Carol also joined Portland Golf Club, where they enjoyed many close friends, great golf and good times. It was through PGC that Jim was introduced to the Lyder Cup golfing group, which provided many happy memories. Jim was known for his quick wit, tight wallet, love of golf, and yarn-spinning mastery. The last of these traits kept his children enthralled as the family made its annual pilgrimage to the world-renowned amusement destination, Camden Park, in Huntington, West Virginia.
In addition to Carol, Jim is survived by his son, Jim Harkins “Jimmy” (Diana); daughters, Barbara Harkins “Fave”, Cindy “Cinderella” (Michael) Grimm, and Connie Harkins “Constance Mary” (Doug Newby); granddaughters, Emma and Catherine Harkins; sister, Kathy “Toots” (George) Reeb; good friend and brother-in-law, Al Hamm; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Sally; and brother, Patrick.

Jim was a “super” guy and will be greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 22, 2017, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Portland, followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Catholic Charities.
