February 13, 1936 ~ May 12, 2017 (age 81)
In 1988 Jim and Carol, his wife of 59 years, headed to Portland, where Jim served as President of Marketing One before he and Carol started and successfully operated their own Alpha Graphics print shop. Jim and Carol also joined Portland Golf Club, where they enjoyed many close friends, great golf and good times. It was through PGC that Jim was introduced to the Lyder Cup golfing group, which provided many happy memories. Jim was known for his quick wit, tight wallet, love of golf, and yarn-spinning mastery. The last of these traits kept his children enthralled as the family made its annual pilgrimage to the world-renowned amusement destination, Camden Park, in Huntington, West Virginia.
In addition to Carol, Jim is survived by his son, Jim Harkins “Jimmy” (Diana); daughters, Barbara Harkins “Fave”, Cindy “Cinderella” (Michael) Grimm, and Connie Harkins “Constance Mary” (Doug Newby); granddaughters, Emma and Catherine Harkins; sister, Kathy “Toots” (George) Reeb; good friend and brother-in-law, Al Hamm; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Sally; and brother, Patrick.
Jim was a “super” guy and will be greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 22, 2017, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Portland, followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Catholic Charities.
