Janice Burt Obituary

Janice (“Jan”) Burt passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 in Wilsonville, Oregon at the age of 88. She was born on May 13, 1929 in Centralia, Washington to William and Marion Oliver. Jan was the youngest of three children; her siblings, Ellis William Oliver and Marion O. McCaw Garrison, have preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Calvin, and by her sons William (Johnnie) of Hubbard, Oregon and Thomas, of Santa Barbara, California. She has been blessed with two grandchildren, Rebecca (Israel) Rosas and Evan (Lacey) Burt and two great grandchildren.

Jan spent many a summer at her parents’ beach cabin on Puget Sound near Olympia. One of Jan’s greatest joys was vacationing on the Sound. She loved being on the water, and when she wasn’t swimming, she was boating or beachcombing for shells.

Upon graduating high school, Jan attended Whitman College, where she met her future husband, Calvin Burt. The two were wed in Centralia on June 10, 1951 after Jan graduated with a degree in Psychology. The family later settled in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where they lived for 54 years. Jan and Cal were married for 66 years.

In addition to teaching piano lessons, Jan did the accounting for Plant Deck, Inc., her husband’s business. Jan was a long-time member of the Friends of Springbrook Park and was instrumental in creating that park. She was also active in her local P.E.O. chapter for many years. In her spare time, she loved researching her Oliver family tree and heavily contributed to the 500-page genealogy, The Olivers of Cardiganshire.

Jan was a loving, devoted wife and mother. She made family her highest priority. In addition to raising her two sons, she doted on her siblings and eight nephews and often instigated family reunions. Jan was especially close to her sister. When Marion’s health declined, Jan made many trips to Seattle over the years to support her. Jan also found time to care for and serve people in the local community.

Jan’s life was marked by an abiding peace and love owing to her deep faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. She attended Lake Grove Presbyterian, singing in the choir as well as playing her father’s bass violin in the church orchestra. She loved her church community that gathered there on Sundays.

A private memorial service will be held at The Springs at Wilsonville assisted living facility. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Janice’s memory to Friends of Springbrook Park, Friends of Tryon Creek and/or Lake Grove Presbyterian Church.
