Jere Mooney Obituary

Jere Lou Volland was born December 28, 1929, to B. Marie Manning and Virgil H. Volland, in Long Beach, Calif. Her parents were new arrivals to Southern California having followed the extended families from Canada via Nebraska. The family moved to Sherman Oaks, California, in the San Fernando Valley where her parents enrolled her in Marymount High School in Westwood, Califorinia.

After graduation, she chose to enroll at Dominican College in San Rafael, California. After her freshman year, she decided to return to Los Angeles where she entered the University of Southern California. She was chosen to join Delta Gamma where she had several friends from high school.

On St. Patrick’s Day in 1951, she renewed a friendship from her high school days with Bill Mooney. That friendship became a courtship that resulted in their marriage August 22, 1953, in Westwood. The first child born was William III (June) in 1954, followed by James (Stephanie) in 1956, Greg (Kim) in 1957, Bryan (Kristie) in 1959 and finally a girl, Monica in 1965. With each new child came a new home in a new city that led to Portland.

Jere Lou made friends easily, making life for the family pleasant. The extended family now has grown to 28. Included in her family always were dogs and cats for whom she cared for without reservation. Jere Lou had been challenged during the past three years with medical problems, a challenge she bore with optimism and good humor. As she takes up residence in heaven, the stars will no doubt be brighter, the future more serene for her family and the 28 left will continue to grow in number because of her example.

A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at St. Juan Diego Parish.

The family suggests remembrances be sent to Central Catholic High School or the Oregon Humane Society.

Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
