October 2, 1933 ~ June 5, 2024 (age 90)
Joanne (Sather) Bauer passed away on June 5, 2024 at the age of 90. She was born October 2, 1933 in Tacoma, Washington to Arthur and Frances (Hartman) Sather, the elder of two daughters. Her family moved to Newberg, Oregon in 1948 and she met her future husband, Delburt Bauer at Newberg High School. She excelled in school and was the only female speaker at her high school commencement. She went to Oregon State University for one year, focusing on business studies. Joanne and Delburt married after he returned from military service in 1953. They bought a small acreage in Canby, Oregon where they lived for 60 years, and had two children.
Joanne immersed herself in many activities involving her family, including helping with Cub Scouts, leading a sewing and cooking 4-H club, and volunteering as scorekeeper for Canby Little League baseball teams. She was a member of the Canby United Methodist Church, working as their treasurer for many years, and helping with children’s Sunday school and Women’s Circle bazaars and events. Hobbies and groups include sewing and quilting, bowling leagues, sweepstakes club, bottle-collecting club, writing children’s stories, scrapbooking, shopping with her granddaughters, and her life-long passion of watching sports. Joanne and Delburt especially loved to travel. When their kids were small, it was camping and road trips and later, retirement cruises to far-flung locales such as Norway, the Mediterranean and East Asia. Happy family memories include her legendary Thanksgiving dinners for extended family for over 50 years, big garage sales, family stays at the beach, Sisters, Hood River and Maui, and lovely Christmas celebrations for which she spent months shopping for special stocking stuffers for each person.
Joanne worked as a part-time bookkeeper for the Clackamas County Fair for 50 years and totally enjoyed all aspects of the fair every summer.
Joanne and Delburt moved to SpringRidge Retirement Community in Wilsonville in 2014, where she enjoyed playing cards and continued to cheer on her favorite sports teams (the Blazers and the Mariners). Delburt passed away in 2015, after 61 happily married years together. Joanne’s family grieves her loss, but they take comfort in knowing that Joanne and Delburt are together again.
Joanne is survived by her sister Arlene and brother-in-law Don; her son William and wife Cindy (Doyle); her daughter Judy and husband Mark Griffith; three grandchildren: Vesna Stuchly, Alex Bauer (and wife Kassie), Amanda Hargadine (and husband Dan) and three great grandchildren: Milena, Beau and Betsy.
A Celebration of Life BBQ is planned for July 13, 2-4pm at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in the Fir Grove, in Canby. All family and friends are welcome to attend.
