November 22, 1926 ~ July 8, 2019 (age 92)
John “Jack” Lumber, a lifelong Oregonian, passed away July 8, 2019. He was the second son of Roy and Elizabeth Lumber and spent his early days in the St. Johns area of Portland.
He attended Skyline Grade School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy Air Corps after graduation during World War II. Following his military service, he attended University of Portland, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Business Administration.
In 1947 Jack married Barbara Bottler, the mother of their four children. They were married 31 years before Barbara’s passing in 1978. In 1981 he married Loretta Leonard until her passing from cancer in 1992. In 2000, Jack married Nancy Carpenter. They remained married until his recent passing.
After graduation from the University of Portland, Jack went to work for Hazeltine for several years. The remainder of his career was with American Steel, where he was employed for 39 years. He was originally hired as an outside salesman. During his tenure there, he rose to become Sales Manager as well as serving in the capacity of Assistant General Manager. Jack also served a term as president of the National Steel Association.
His greatest joy in life, first and foremost, was his family. Jack also loved to play golf and tennis. He was a member of The Irvington Tennis Club since 1967 and a member of Orchard Hills Golf and Country Club for over 30 years.
Jack was active in the Lutheran Church for all of his adult life and most recently a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Roy in 2015. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Virginia (Gerry) Plank, Debi (Duane) Mellen, Carolyn Lumber (Linda Rease), Brian (Lindsay) Lumber; stepdaughters, Cindy (Michael) Bowen and Sharon (Peter) Van der Meulen; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private Interment will be in Riverview Abbey and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 20, 2019, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 11560 S.E. Market St., Portland, OR 97216.
