February 17, 1937 ~ May 24, 2011 (age 74)
John was born February 17, 1937, in Trivandrum, Kerala, India, to Joseph and Theresiamma Vithayathil. John’s wisdom and intelligence were exceeded only by his love for his wife, Rani, and his caring and kindness for his family and friends.
John received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 1967. Impressed by his doctoral dissertation related to High Voltage/Direct Current (HVdc) power transmission, the Bonneville Power Administration offered John an engineering postion in Portland. For nearly 45 years, John and Rani called the Portland/Vancouver area home where they raised their four children.
After 20 years with the government, Johh worked as an independent consultant for nearly 25 years. Widely recognized as a leading expert in HVdc transmission, he also made key contributions to HVac transmission, including the invention of the Rapid Adjustment of Network Impedance (RANI) scheme, a system he named after his beloved wife, Rani. John was awarded several patents, distinctions and awards during his professional career. An IEEE Fellow, he received the Herman Halperin award for lifetime contributions in his field. His highest professional honor came in 2000 when he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering.
