July 17, 1922 ~ November 28, 2024 (age 102) 102 Years Old
Ellis Joseph Sharkey Jr. (Joe) passed away at his home in Queensbury, NY on November 28, 2024.
He was born July 17, 1922, in Portland, OR and was the first child of Ellis and Jessie Sharkey. He went to schools there until 1941. He attended the University of Portland and worked at the Oregon Shipbuilding and Commercial Iron Works shipyards during 1941 and 1942. He enlisted in the US Navy in1942 and served until 1946. During his enlistment, he attained the rating of Aviation Machinist Mate and then was sent to the University of Washington, to the V-12 Officer’ Training Program. He was commissioned as an Ensign in 1946. Following his discharge from service, he returned to the Univ of Wash. and graduated in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He married Margaret J. Dudley in Portland June 21, 1947and they then drove to Lynn, MA where he was employed by General Electric Co. as a Test Engineer. His career with GE also took him to Schenectady, NY, New York City and Los Angeles, where he retired as District Sales Manager, in 1984.
In 1989, they moved to Green Valley, AZ. They lived there in the winters and spent the summers at their home on Lake George.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, golf and traveling. He served on the board of the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts in Pasadena, CA, The Genealogical Society of Green Valley, The Tubac Historical Society, the Chapparals RV Club and Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a member of American Soc. of Mechanical Engineers, American Nuclear Soc. National Rifle Assoc. and U S Power Squadron.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Margaret, his sister, Janice and her husband, Gordon Hefford. He is survived by his son, Patrick and daughter in law, Beth and their children, Richard and Madison Sharkey-Percy (Josh).
He will be entombed with his wife, Margaret, at Riverview Abbey in Portland, OR. December 10, 2024, at 2PM. A funeral Mass will be held later, at Sacred Heart Church in Lake George, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Univ. of Portland, 5000 N Willamette Blvd, Portland, OR 97203, Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, PO Box 1869, Lexington, VA. 24450 or High Peaks Hospice 1247 Dix Ave., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.
