Joseph F. Wood was born March 21, 1938, the first full day of spring, to William H. “Will” and Dorothy D. Wood. Joe was delivered by his grandfather, Dr. Joseph F. Wood, on Dr. Wood’s birthday. Joe died on Christmas Eve, after fighting Parkinson’s Disease for nine years. Joe always tried to look on the brighter side. He can be remembered as saying he was in great shape for the shape he was in.
He attended U.S. Grant High School where he lettered all four years on the golf team. He attended Oregon State College, now University. While at OSU, he played on the golf team and joined Sigma Nu Fraternity. Joe met Margaret L. “Peggy” Wood at OSU and they were married upon Joe’s graduation 55 years ago. They are the proud parents of five children.
Joe stayed active with Sigma Nu after graduation, serving as Division Commander, Trustee of Sigma Nu Educational Foundation and founder and past President of Fifth Point Properties. He was the 80th inductee into Sigma Nu’s Hall of Honor, the Fraternity’s highest honor.
Joe’s first job upon graduation was with Johnson and Johnson. He then worked for Salem Federal Savings & Loan and later joined Norris, Beggs & Simpson in 1967, specializing in office sales and leasing. He became a partner in 1971 and retired in 2003 as an Executive Vice-President.
Joe was active in the commercial real estate field serving as past President of Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), past President of Metropolitan Association of Realtors, Director of Oregon Association of Realtors, and founding member of the Commercial Association of Realtors.
Besides his family and real estate, Joe’s passion was golf. He began playing at the age of eight at Alderwood Country Club (now part of PDX). He continued playing at Columbia Edgewater Country Club and later joined Waverley Country Club. He was also a member of Astoria Golf & Country Club. He enjoyed competing in many golf tournaments until Parkinson’s forced him to stop playing. He was also a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Arlington Club.
He gave back to the sport of golf by serving as a Director of the Western Golf Association/Evan’s Scholarship Foundation and was a past President of the Oregon Golf Association.
He is survived by his wonderful wife and caregiver, Peggy; and children, Mary Beth Wood, Matthew J. (Ann), Maureen W. (Tony) Colburn, Michael L. (Jennifer), Mitchell W. (Miriam); 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
