Kathleen Carney Obituary

Kathleen Elizabeth Condon Carney died peacefully in her home on November 11, 2016, holding the hand of her husband of nearly 65 years, Robert. Kathleen was born in Ottawa, Illinois on February 12, 1927. Her family moved to Portland in 1937. She attended St. Phillip Neri School and St. Mary’s Academy. Kathleen was a Cadet Nurse at Providence School of Nursing, Class of 1948. She was proud to be a registered nurse and let all her health care providers know she was “an old nurse.”Kathleen and Robert enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland to visit Bob’s family in County Mayo and explore the beautiful country. Kathleen was an official Irish whiskey taster for both Bushmills and Jameson’s. They cruised to Alaska, Mexico, and the capitals of Europe and went through the Panama Canal. Feeling adventuresome they visited Liz in Indonesia. Yearly, they attended USS Bush reunions for the shipmates Bob served with in WWII, making friends across the United States. Her favorite get away was Cannon Beach. It was their honeymoon destination in 1951. Kathleen’s suitcase was always half packed and at the ready.

She loved to give parties. She enjoyed sewing with her “We Care” friends to create baby layettes for low income moms. Kathleen was a story teller. Some of her favorite stories included: coming to Portland from St Louis on the bus, growing up in St. Phillip Neri parish, her father John Condon making wine in the basement, tales of her mother Elizabeth. Kathleen had a wonderful imagination and appreciation for beauty. Kathleen loved chocolate, champagne and pink flowers.

Kathleen was the mother of five children: Mike, Dan, Jim, Liz, and Tom. She was grandmother of five and had one great-grandchild. She was the older sister to Patricia Abbott, Tom Condon, and Jack Condon. The aunt of many nieces and nephews. She was a treasured friend.

We will miss Kathleen’s optimism kindness generosity and caring spirit.
