Lawrence Murahashi Obituary

Lawrence Kiyoki Murahashi was born November 10, 1932. Larry passed into the Lord’s presence at 79 after a courageous battle with cancer on July 19, 2012.

Larry was born in Troutdale, Oregon, the second of three sons born to Toyoki and Kazue Yokote Murahashi, who along with his older brother Oscar, preceded him in death.

After his family returned from Minidoka Internment Camp, where he attended school during his sixth and seventh grade years, he graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in 1950. He served with distinction in the 7th Army, stationed in Germany during the post-Korean War period as a tank specialist in 1955 – 1956.

He subsequently lived in Portland for the balance of his life. He married Rose Sumoge on September 21, 1957, raised a family, worked his vocational years as a dairyman and proud member of the Teamsters Union, and gave back to the community, most notably as Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 32 in SE Portland, and President of the Gresham Japanese American Citizen’s League in 1987.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three sons (and their wives), Kent (Cathy), Mark (Carol), and Scott (Cindy); seven grandchildren who brought him great joy in life: Laura, Allie, Holly, David, Kayla, Bailey and Brenton; and his younger brother, Roy. His warm gregarious personality, engaging smile and infectious laugh will be dearly missed.

A viewing will be held at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 319 SW Taylors Ferry Road, Portland.

A committal service with full military honors will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 12:30 PM at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, beginning at 1:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in his name to be given to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1333 SE 28th Avenue, Portland, OR 97214.
